The makeover

I met him at a hotel in town. He was sitted in the corner of the room sipping a glass of whatever it was leisurely. I was starving; so I look around and set my eyes on the waiter; “Caleb, Coffee please, na samosa mbili.” The waiter looks at me probably wondering how I recognized him. He must have forgotten his name was on the tag. After a few minutes he arrives with my order and before I know it I am feasting on it like a hungry lion on its prey. I finished the coffee, made my way to the counter and paid my bill.

My next stop was the motto parking, hop on a bike and go home. But before I could, the guy at the coffee shop stops me. He calls me by name; that’s odd. I give him a similar stare to the one Caleb gave me. “Surely, you haven’t forgotten me. We did business together, three years ago. Remember?” My mind had to roll back three years earlier. How could I forget that face?

I was fresh from high school, joined a business college and it thought me a great virtue; ‘how to be proactive.’ I looked around and the only basket I could put all my eggs into was the egg business. I set out to look for a partner, He showed up. He was very handsome, well-groomed, innocent, a bright young man and we seemed to have a similar agenda. After a dialogue we got into business.

Filling an Employee Self-Appraisal Form

The other day, I received a mail from the country director of the company I work for informing me that the reviews were around the corner. For some reason, I did not look forward to it. That’s how most of us feel. It is that time when you get to know the details of your work performance on some specific areas.

Some of these areas include but are not restricted to;

  • Communication
  • Organisation
  • Professionalism
  • Attitude
  • Values fit

But here is the catch; your boss is not the only person who gets to review you. In the review form, there is one column where your direct supervisor awards you a mark and another column where you award yourself a mark for each category  based on your performance. This is what we call self-appraisal.

The review form is divided into a number of relevant sections with a numeric ranking that helps you and your direct supervisor rate your performance from maybe 1-4 and another column which allows you to give an explanation on why you gave yourself that score.

In some companies, the self-appraisal is not used to draw a conclusion on the employee performance, but in other companies, the employee self-appraisal is compared to the employers review and a final conclusion drawn.

Whichever the case, employees normally have difficulties when it comes to filling such forms.

Here are some tips that will help you fill out a review/self-appraisal form:

  1. Be generous but don’t exaggerate- Give yourself a high rank but do not overstate your competencies
  1. Outline the areas you need to improve on and acknowledge them
  1. While you write down the self-review, keep in mind that it is about you! As much as you might be tempted to talk about someone else and their faults, forget about them and focus on you.
  1. Take advantage of it to ask for something that will help your career grow. Just make sure it satisfies the business needs as well. For instance you can ask for more trainings or an activity that will help you improve your competence in the job.
  1. DO NOT insist on your weak areas. Instead, try and be defensive; remember this is about your performance.
  1. On the final comments section, write a brief summary on your work experience and go through the self-evaluation form once again to ensure you have not made any mistakes.

All the best filling your appraisal form.

This Man's Mind

I think women (not our daughters, sisters wives or mothers other women) dress in ways to invite attention to themselves. Then they make all this noise to demonise us men.

And of course many women know, they bring rape upon themselves. They dress provocatively, walk provocatively… What do you expect a man to do?

Because women wake up in the morning thinking:

Hmm, today is a good day to be raped. Let me wear this tight top and walk home in the evening. I hope – I really hope – some man pulls me into a ditch, rips off my equally tight trousers, and rapes me. So I can then walk home filthy, naked and bruised and everyone looking at me… because I deserved it.

I feel like being raped today so I’m going to hang out with my boys and rave past midnight and try to catch…

The Lie Ends

Mkate Nusu

There was nothing else to say anymore. Mary stood at the door of her apartment and stared at it for the last time. She replayed various past events and occasions in her mind. She smiled and chuckled a bit and with one last sigh she locked the door and gave the landlord the key and slowly wheeled her suitcase to her car. She squeezed the suitcase in her boot and slowly pulled out looking around at what was once home for a decade. How fast had 10 years gone?

As she hit the highway her eyes began to tear, this was it, this was a toast to the new, to the exciting, to the unknown, it excited and scared her in equal measure. She hit the accelerator and rolled down her window to feel the warm air on her face. She had got what she wanted. She needed to enjoy…
